Strandbeest. Have you ever heard about them?
The Strandbeest are wonderful creatures which look like to come out fairytale worlds. Actually they are beings created and invented by Theo Jansen, a Dutch artist who decided to devoted to the creation of huge sculptures which are able to move thanks to the only wind propulsion.
Theo “sets” these creatures made of pieces of electrical pipes and fabric “free” around the beaches so that they can move freely.
There are some creeping, other ones seem millipedes and other more look like communicating each other.

The big size Strandbeest are realized only by Theo who organizes shows worldwide to astonish big and little ones.
These creatures have a very delicate and real movement and seem really fairytale creatures coming from other worlds.
Theo, in a TED, tells that he gives life to his creatures allowing them to walk free on the beaches and explore them thanks to the wind.
His dream is to create a new generation of animals and in few years set them free on the beaches leaving them surviving alone.
Now Theo is studying all the danger’s conditions a Strandbeest can find itself in and he is trying to solve them.
To avoid ending into the water, some of them have a “sensor” realized by ropes and bottles: it allows them to know when they are near the water and so change direction.
On the contrary, the problem due to too much wind which could destroy the creatures, is solved by Theo thanks to a small hammer allowing them, alone, to place into the ground in a point and avoid to fly away.
These beings are supplied only by wind power, which is their food and who knows…maybe in the future they will be present in many beaches worldwide free to move.
