My stand at the MakersTown in Brussels

My stand at the MakersTown in Brussels

One day my phone rang. I received an English call where I am asked my availability to participate at the MakersTown in Brussels, a makers faire.

At the MakersTown in Brussels makers come from all over Europe

We exchanged a few emails and some filled forms so I found out to have been chosen, together with other only 50 makers coming from all over Europe, to held my stand at the MakersTown in Brussels.

They found me online a bit by chance: they were struck by my story, my experience at MIT and above all by the fact I teach robotics to children.

You can imagine my happiness to hear that someone follows me even abroad.

Activities with children at the MakersTown in Brussels

We came to an agreement: I had a stand to do some activities with children and I could organized everything as I thought best.

When we arrived there I found out that only Google and Icub had a stand as big as mine. The other ones were all smaller!

Here is the leaving day, I, after have talked at the Stati Generali dell’Innovazione in Bergamo, leave towards Brussels for a full and intense day, rich in emotions.

We prepared the stand and the first visitors began to arrive. Also adults were curious of my fruit playing, the robot dancing, the frogs with led…but not all wanted to “dirty their own hands”, sit there on the floor with us and experiment, so they preferred to look at us from the top.

On the contrary, kids were ready to play and enjoy themselves and immediately they sat with us, super thrilled. After have tried all our activities they asked us if there were other more!

Both the little ones and the youngsters as old as I were bewitched by robotics we experimented.

Measure oneself with English and children

It was very beautiful to measure oneself with the explanations in English. The most part of children attended international schools and came from all over the world. 8 years old children who spoke 4 languages and passed from one to the other by an incredible naturalness! How many possibilities!

At the stand came also several teachers who made me a lot of different proposals to teach the children of their classes building robots and make experiment with these instruments.

At the end of the day also the several adults were sat with us on the floor to experiment! See ladies with heels and men with jacket and tie be thrilled was a great satisfaction!

What’s better than practise and experiment with my greatest passions together with children? I confess that I was a bit worried…when they talked to me about numbers, I was afraid not to be up to do this, not to be able to satisfy everyone, to forget some material.

Many children and many visitors

It’s not so easy to plan a faire and you think at the MakersTown in Brussels passed over 1500 people!

Also Andrea and Luca arrived. They organized the event and they told me they had looked for my story and to have been struck by my thousand activities I had already done despite I am only 16. You think they have already in mind thousand other projects to propose to me!

Then a Polish guy of a startup stops. He notices I use also Ozobot with children (it was invented in Poland!) and after have been left gaping in front of all I do with children, he gifted me with a kit of his instruments, asking me to experiment with it with the children at my courses!

At MakersTown in Brussels I created many connections…who knows what roads they’ll open to me!

I’ve come back home really full of this new experience and very ready to face new challenges and new projects!
